Welcome Spring: Growth and Renewal with Plant Cuttings and Art

Garden Goddesses

Spring is upon us—a season of renewal, growth, and endless possibilities. As the sun shines a little brighter and longer, and nature awakens from its chilly slumber, I am surrounded by a desert landscape bursting with vitality and beauty. This time of year invites us to nurture not only the world around us but also our own lives, planting seeds of change and cultivating hope for what’s to come. One of the most magical acts in spring is taking plant cuttings to grow something new. With just a small piece of a thriving plant, we can create something entirely fresh—a new life, a new beginning. It’s a simple yet profound process, and it serves as a beautiful metaphor for life itself.

The Power of Cuttings: A Lesson in Transformation

Nearly 15 years ago, I purchased a pint-sized, potted Elephant Bush (Portulacaria afra) and planted it in my Arizona-Sonora desert yard expecting it to survive for maybe a season or two. To my surprise, the low-maintenance succulent shrub thrived and, over the years, gave life to at least a dozen other potted plants. That process taught me that, when we take a cutting from a plant, we're not discarding or damaging it; we're harnessing its strength and potential. We're giving it the chance to evolve into something new while preserving the beauty and essence of the original. Life often mirrors this process. Sometimes we must let go of a part of ourselves—be it an old habit, a past failure, or a limiting belief—in order to create space for growth and transformation. Just like a cutting, these pieces of ourselves are not wasted; they are repurposed into something valuable and meaningful.

Rooting in Resilience

Plant cuttings take time to establish roots, and the journey can be delicate. They need the right conditions to thrive—water, sunlight, soil, and care. Similarly, in our own lives, creating something new requires patience and resilience. We need to nurture our dreams, ideas, and passions, ensuring they are grounded in the right environment. And just like some cuttings might take longer to root, some transformations in life may not happen overnight. But with persistence, we can watch those roots take hold and grow stronger.

Eventually, cuttings mature, becoming new plants that stand tall and bloom with beauty. It's a reminder that every small start has the potential to flourish into something extraordinary. Whether we're starting a new project, learning a new skill, or embarking on a personal journey, we must trust the process of growth and embrace the beauty of becoming.

As I welcome spring, I'm drawing inspiration from my Elephant Bush cuttings and mixing in a good dose of creativity with these colorful, hand-painted, terracotta pots to help fertilize and encourage my own growth and renewal . I'm choosing to see challenges as opportunities to grow, and I'm celebrating the small beginnings that can lead to great transformations. This season, let 's allow ourselves to root in resilience, embrace change, and bloom into the vibrant life we all deserve.
